Kane County Cougars News Release
Burlington, IA - The Kane County Cougars and Burlington Bees were locked in a 1-1 in the ninth inning Sunday afternoon when Jeff Baisley, the Midwest League's Most Valuable Player, smoked a two-run double to propel the Cougars to a 3-1 win. Baisley now has 104 RBIs this season, which moves him ahead of Adrian Gonzalez and into sole possession of second place on the franchise's all-time single-season list. Joe Newby picked up the win, and Brad Kilby tossed a perfect ninth for the save.
Chad Boyd started the final inning by drawing a walk from Cody Harkcom and then took third on a single by Frank Martinez and an error by Bees outfielder Felix Peralta. Harkcom was replaced by Chris Hayes, who allowed the two-bagger by Baisley that provided the Cougars with a 3-1 advantage.
The game's first run came in the second when Matt Sulentic smacked a two-out single off Dan Cortes to score Jose Pineda. Kane County starter Ben Jukich held the advantage until the fourth inning when he allowed a run-scoring single to Jeff Howell that made it 1-1.
Jukich lasted five innings, gave up the one run on five hits, walked four and struck out four in the no-decision. Joe Newby (5-0) took over for the next three innings and ended up claiming the victory, thanks to a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth from Brad Kilby, who notched his ninth save.
The Cougars (37-25) finished the season 7-7 against the Bees and now continue their final road trip of the regular season to Quad Cities for a four-game set that starts Monday night at 6:30 CT. Trey Shields (10-9, 4.96) is scheduled to face Adam Daniels (7-11, 3.21) for the Swing (37-24).
