
Kernels make early lead stick in 2-1 win over River Bandits

DAVENPORT, Iowa - In a game with only six total hits but 14 total walks, the Kernels edged the Quad Cities River Bandits 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Kernels connected with four hits while the Bandits recorded only two hits all game. Kernels pitchers issued 10 total walks in the game.
The Kernels took a 2-0 in the 1st inning, and the lead held up until the end. Kevin Moesquit was issued a leadoff walk by Bandits starter Tyrell Jenkins. Moesquit stole 2nd base and went to 3rd base on a throwing error by Bandits catcher Juan Castillo. He scored on a wild pitch by Jenkins for the game's first run. Andy Workman's 2-out RBI single later in the inning scored Kaleb Cowart, who had walked as the game's 3rd batter, giving the Kernels the two run cushion.
In the 5th inning Quad Cities tallied their only run of the day without the use of a base hit. Roberto Reyes drew a leadoff walk from Kernels starter Austin Wood. After two fly outs, Wood walked Anthony Garcia to put two men on before exiting the ballgame. Reliever Aaron Meade then walked Colin Walsh to load the bases and walked Juan Castillo to bring in a run, cutting the Kernels lead to 2-1.
Wood went 4.2 innings and allowed one run on one hit. He struck out seven and walked seven. Aaron Meade (1-0) got the win in relief for Cedar Rapids, going 2.1 innings. After the two walks to begin his outing, Meade retired the final 7 batters he faced. He allowed no runs on no hits while striking out none and walking two.
Quad Cities put runners on in the 8th and 9th innings, but they were unable to push a run across. Colin Walsh led off the 8th inning with a double down the left field line, and with two outs he was standing at 3rd base. However, Kernels reliever Stephen Tromblee struck out Luis Mateo to end the inning.
In the 9th inning Tromblee walked the first hitter, Garrett Wittels, and hit the second batter, Roberto Reyes. A sacrifice bunt by Matt Williams put the tying run at 3rd base and winning run at 2nd base with only one hit. With the infield in, Tromblee got Nick Martini to ground out to short. Ty Kelley then came on a got Anthony Garcia to ground out to 3rd base to end the game.
Tromblee went 1.2 innings and allowed no runs on one hit while striking out two and walking one. Kelley recorded his 5th save by retiring the only hitter he faced.
Jenkins (1-2) started for Quad Cities and took the loss over six innings. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out six and walking four. Robert Stock pitched three scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit while striking out five and walking none.
The Kernels continue the series vs. Quad Cities in Davenport on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m.
