Burlington Bees News Release
PEORIA, Illinois - A day after scoring 12 runs off ten hits in a series-win over Cedar Rapids, the Bees traveled Peoria, Illinois without their offense. The Burlington Bees fell to the Peoria Chiefs with a 2-to-1 final score.
Raul Alcantara made his seventh start for the Bees and his second following a win in his previous start. Alcantara came into Saturday's game with two consecutive losses and a season-high of six innings pitched in his last outing. Alcantara's last start was also the first time since 2010 that he pitched an outing and did not give up a run.
Alcantara wasn't as sharp on Saturday, but still effective enough to keep the Bees in the game. Despite allowing the leadoff man to reach in four of the five innings he pitched in, Alcantara only allowed the Chiefs to score in the third inning. The two runs came off a leadoff walk and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Alcantara.
With Zeke DeVoss standing at third base, Taiwan Easterling hit a groundball to the hole between third and short. Bees' shortstop Sean Jamieson backhanded the play well, but couldn't find a grip on the ball and threw the ball over Douglas Landaeta at first. Easterling would also score on a base hit by Wes Darvil.
The Chiefs' starting pitcher, Patrick Francescon not only shut out the Bees through the first seven innings, he also no-hit the Bees through the first five. Aaron Shipman had the first hit for the Bees with an infield single he legged out by a hair.
The Bees scored in the top of the eighth after Landaeta and Wade Kirkland lined two balls into the outfield with one out. Shipman followed with a walk, which loaded the bases for Jamison. The Bees got a run on a sacrifice fly from Jamieson, but could not bring in another run.
The Bees ended up losing 2-to-1; Alcantara (2-4) took his fourth loss of the year and Francescon (4-1) earned his fourth win.
The Bees play game two tomorrow at 2 p.m. For information on the Bees schedule, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
