Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Kernels lost 2-0 to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Sunday afternoon, snapping a four-game winning streak. The Kernels were held to four hits on the afternoon. The two teams meet on Monday at 12:05 p.m. in the rubber game of the series and the final game of the six-day home stand.
The TinCaps (11-18, 41-57) took the 2-0 lead with a single run in both the second and third inning. The leadoff man reached in both innings and came around to score both times. Jake Bauers started the second frame with a base on balls. After a couple of one-out singles, Bauers came in from third base on a RBI groundout by Henry Charles. In the third inning, Trea Turner led off with a double into left-center. He advanced to third base on a fly out and scored on Fernando Perez's RBI sacrifice fly to left.
Ryan Eades (5-11) was solid on the mound for the Kernels in the start but took the loss. He allowed just the two runs in his six innings on the hill. Eades allowed five hits and walked one. He struck out two, both coming in his sixth and final inning. Alex Muren threw two perfect innings for the Kernels, striking out two in relief. Jared Wilson pitched the top of the ninth inning, allowing no hits or hits while recording one strikeout.
The Kernels (15-14, 46-53) offense was unable to solve Fort Wayne's starter Jeffery Enloe. The southpaw held the Kernels to four hits and no runs over 5 1/3 innings. Enloe (2-3) struck out one and walked none in the victory. The Kernels tallied a pair of singles to begin the sixth inning. Enloe exited the game after getting the first out in the inning, but the Kernels stranded both runners as reliever Eric Yardley recorded a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning. Yardley went a total of 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits. He struck out three and walked one. Ryan Butler struck out the side in the ninth inning for his second save.
