SOUTH BEND, IN - The Peoria Chiefs were held to just three hits and four base runners in a Sunday afternoon 6-0 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks at Four Winds Field in Indiana. The loss drops the Chiefs to 17-12 in the second half of the season and 54-44 overall with one game left on the season-long 10-game road trip.
South Bend right-hander Markus Solbach and Chiefs lefty Rob Kaminsky both threw three shutout innings before the hosts got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With one down, Kaminsky walked Daniel Palka and a fielder's choice left a runner on first with two outs. Marty Herum launched a two-out, two-run homer into the left-field berm for the first runs of the game and a 2-0 Silver Hawks lead. After back-to-back walks, Kaminsky gave way to reliever Josh Lucas who struck out the next batter to end the inning.
The Silver Hawks extended the lead in the fifth against Lucas. DJ Bowman was hit by a pitch to start the frame and Fidel Pena's triple made it 3-0. Chuck Taylor's sacrifice fly put South Bend on top 4-0.
In the seventh the Chiefs deficit grew as Robert Stock allowed four singles. Pena drove home Bowman and then scored on a single by Joe Munoz as the Silver Hawks went on top 6-0.
The Chiefs were held to just three hits and four base-runners against the German-born Solbach. Kenny Peoples-Walls was hit by a pitch in the third and caught stealing. C.J. McElroy Jr. singled in the fourth and was also caught stealing with one out. Justin Ringo doubled to start the fifth and moved to third on a deep flyout by Steve Bean but he was stranded. The Chiefs final base runner against Solbach came in the eighth when Richy Pedroza singled with two outs but he was left at first.
Kaminsky (4-2) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over a season-low 3 2/3 innings in the loss. Lucas allowed two runs on one hit and a hit batter while striking out three over 1 1/3 innings. Stock allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout in a season-high three innings.
