Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
A sacrifice fly by Niko Vasquez in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Travis Mitchell and gave the Quad Cities River Bandits a 3-2 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday night at Modern Woodman Park in Davenport. Mitchell had tripled to lead off the inning off Kernels reliever Jeremy Thorne (3-3) and scored on Vasquez's sac fly with one out in the 10th inning.
The Kernels weren't able to make up any ground on first place Kane County as the Cougars lost at Wisconsin, 7-3, and lost ground to third place Clinton as they shut out Peoria, 5-0.
Kernels starter Manuel Flores delivered another quality start, allowing a run on four hits and striking out four over seven innings. His counterpart, Quad Cities starter Gary Daley, held the Kernels to a run on just three hits and struck out five over six innings, as neither starter figured in the final decision.
Tyson Auer went 2 for 5 with a stolen base and Matt Crawford was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Roberto Lopez drove in a run on a groundout, but the Kernels couldn't take advantage of scoring opportunities, stranding 11 runners and going 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.
River Bandit reliever Dave Carpenter (3-2) picked up the win, walking one over two innings of relief. Paul Cruz was 1-3 with an RBI and Frederick Parejo was 1-4 with a double and RBI.
