South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Comstock Park, MI - A night after the Silver Hawks ended their eight game losing streak, West Michigan came back to defeat South Bend 3-1 on Friday night. South Bend outhit West Michigan 10 to five, but four double plays turned by the Whitecaps kept the Hawks scoreless until the eighth inning.
West Michigan took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Gustavo Nunez led off with a single against South Bend starter Randy Rodriguez (LP, 1-3) and scored on a triple down the right field line from Brent Wyatt for the 1-0 lead. Brandon Douglas followed with a groundout to second, scoring Wyatt to put West Michigan in front by two after one inning of play.
The Whitecaps added another run in the second, with Luis Salas reaching on a single and scoring later in the inning on a fielder's choice by Nunez for the 3-0 advantage.
Rodriguez then settled down as he and Jordan Meaker (ND) did not allow a hit the rest of the game, but the Silver Hawks offense could not muster any runs.
The Silver Hawks had ample opportunities in the early innings against West Michigan starter Anthony Shawler (WP, 3-3) picking up seven hits through the first six innings. Unfortunately, four ground balls were turned into double plays to keep South Bend off the board.
Shawler went 6.0 innings, allowing the seven hits but no runs, with two strikeouts and no walks before turning it over to the bullpen.
South Bend did plate a run in the top of the eighth, against reliever Tyler Conn (ND). With two outs, Reynaldo Navarro tripled to right-center and scored on a single by Brendan Duffy. The Hawks cut into the lead at 3-1, but Duffy was caught stealing second to end the inning.
Tyler Stohr (SV, 11) came in to pitch the ninth, and closed the door despite allowing a two out single to Alberto Diaz.
The series wraps up Saturday evening with a 7:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Brett Moorhouse (2-6, 3.24 ERA) will be in the starting role for South Bend, opposed by RHP Brandon Hamilton (3-2, 6.29 ERA) of West Michigan. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
