Bees Use Two Position Players as Pitchers in Loss

Burlington, IA (June 11, 2009) - The Burlington Bees used two position players as pitchers Friday night losing to Beloit 10-5 at Community Field. In his third appearance as a pitcher, David Wood pitched four scoreless innings.

Beloit got on the scoreboard early scoring one run in the second. They then took an 8-0 lead scoring seven runs in the top of the third inning. The Bees did start to chip away at that lead scoring two runs in the fourth. Patrick Norris led the inning off with a single and then moved to second when Nick Van Stratten was hit by a pitch. They both moved up a base when Eric Hosmer flew out. Norris then scored the Bees' first run of the day on a wild pitch. Nick Francis drove in the second run of the day reaching on an error, which scored Van Stratten.

The Bees got back within three runs scoring three runs in the eighth inning. Juan Rivera led off with a single and then moved to second when Norris walked. Van Stratten then reached on a Fielder's Choice but there was an error on the play, which scored Rivera, moved Norris to third and Van Stratten to second. Fernando Garcia then blooped a single to score Norris and Van Stratten and the Bees were down just 8-5. Beloit scored their final two runs in the ninth.

Mike Lehmann got the start but was unable to make it out of the third inning. He pitched 2.2 innings allowing eight runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits with one strikeout and five walks. Henry Barerra then recorded one out before coming out of the game due to injury Barry Bowden then pitched one perfect inning.

Bowden came out to pitch the top of the fifth and his first pitch was inside to Alexander Soto. Soto then charged the mound with his bat in hand but was restrained by catcher Jose Bonilla. Both dugouts emptied but no punches were thrown. Both Soto and Bowden were ejected from the game. With a short bullpen, Wood was called on to pitch and he threw four shutout innings allowing four hits with one strikeout and one walk. Chase Fontaine was also called on to pitch and threw the ninth inning allowing two runs on three hits. In all, Wood, Fontaine and Antonio Jimenez switched positions three times during the game.

Juan Rivera was the only Bee with more than one hit going 2-4 with a run scored. Garcia finished the ballgame with two RBI.

The Bees will conclude the series with Beloit Saturday evening at Community Field. Mike Montgomery is the scheduled starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
