Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
For the first time since 2004, the Cedar Rapids Kernels have qualified for the Midwest League playoffs in the first half of the season. A crowd of 3,768 waited out an hour rain delay to see the Kernels defeat Clinton, 6-1, and move into first place in the MWL by a half-game over Kane County as the Cougars were rained out.
Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee allowed a run on three hits and struck out seven over 5 innings, but left the game in the fifth inning with the score tied, 1-1. Reliever Kevin Nabors (1-3) pitched two scoreless innings for his first win as a Kernel. Andrew Taylor and Nick Pugliese struck out four over the final two innings to preserve the win.
Roberto Lopez led the Kernel offense, going 4-4 with a double and RBI. The double was the only hit of the Kernels' nine that went for extra bases. Tyson Auer went 2-3 with an RBI; Adam Younger was 2-4; and Matt Crawford went 1-2 with 2 RBI to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
Clinton starter Brett Lorin (4-4) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five over six innings in taking the loss. Terry Serrano went 1-3 and drove in the LumberKings only run and Denny Almonte went 1-4 with a double.
Game three between the Kernels and LumberKings is Saturday night at 6:35 pm as fans can enjoy a spectacular post-game fireworks show, presented by Procter & Gamble. Gates open at 5:30 pm and tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com The opinions expressed in this release are those of the organization issuing it, and do not necessarily reflect the thoughts or opinions of OurSports Central or its staff.
