West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH- Tyler Stohr struck out the side in the ninth inning Saturday night, the third with the winning run on base, to help the West Michigan Whitecaps hold on for an 8-7 triumph over the Dayton Dragons. The win occurred before a record crowd at Fifth Third Field. Whitecaps' balance was again on display with solid pitching, productive hitting, and stellar defense.
RHP Mark Sorensen took the hill for the Whitecaps in game three of the four game series. Sorensen handled a tough first two innings to settle in for a solid five required for the win. He scattered 9 hits, gave up 4 earned runs, just one walk, and 4 strikeouts.
Dayton built a 3-0 lead on the strength of homeruns. Joey Votto of the Reds, in Dayton on a rehab assignment, drilled a two-run shot to right in the first inning. Kyle Day blasted a solo drive to right in the second.
Down 3-0 the Whitecaps got a huge hit from Ronnie Bourquin. The âCaps third baseman knocked in two runs with a two-out double to make the score, 3-2 Dayton in the third.
The top of the fifth is when the Whitecaps made their move. West Michigan got four hits, including a go-ahead two-run homer from Brent Wyatt, to take the lead for good, 6-3.
Dayton fought back to tally a run in the fifth. Brent Wyatt's throw out of Joey Votto at the plate was key.
The Whitecaps added more runs in the seventh on Billy Nowlin's club-leading sixth home run of the season. It was a two-run shot.
West Michigan slowly saw Dayton edge closer with two runs in the seventh and another in the ninth.
Tyler Stohr took a two-run lead into the ninth and immediately gave up an infield single to Dave Sappelt who would score on a wild pitch. Leading by just one, Stohr struck out Jordan Wideman and Joey Votto before walking Carlos Mendez. Byron Wiley then ripped a hit for men on the corners, and Tyler Stohr struck out Cody Puckett to preserve the win.
Game four of the series is set for Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field. Game time is 2:00 p.m. That is the last scheduled game of the first half of the season.
