Former TinCap Blanks makes MLB debut

Fort Wayne, IN - Fort Wayne alum Kyle Blanks made his MLB debut Friday with the San Diego Padres. The first baseman/outfielder became the fifth Fort Wayne alum to debut in the major leagues this year and the 81st overall to go from Fort Wayne to the major leagues.

In his first major-league at-bat, Blanks pinch-hit for pitcher Mike Ekstrom and was called out on strikes in the 9th inning Friday night.

Blanks, 22, entered the season rated the No. 1 prospect in the San Diego organization according to Baseball America. He played for Fort Wayne in 2006, hitting .292 with 10 home runs and 52 RBIs in 86 games. This year with Triple-A Portland, Blanks made the transition to the outfield, hitting .283 with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs in 66 games before being called up.

Blanks is the 9th member of the 2006 Fort Wayne club to make his major league debut.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps take on the South Bend Silver Hawks Saturday at Coveleski Stadium at 6:00pm. Friday's suspended game will be resumed with the score 3-1 in the bottom of the 4th and normal nine innings expected. Then, a seven-inning game will be played to complete the twinbill. The next time the TinCaps play at Parkview Field is Thursday, June 25th.
