
TinCaps Clinch First-Half Title With Sweep

South Bend, IN - The Fort Wayne TinCaps nailed down the first-half Eastern Division championship with a sweep of two games against the South Bend Silver Hawks, Saturday at Coveleski Stadium. Game 1 was the conclusion of a suspended game which Fort Wayne won, 7-3. Game 2 was a seven-inning affair in which the TinCaps rolled, 4-1.
It is the first half-season championship for Fort Wayne since 2003. The 45 wins is a franchise record for wins in a half.
The first game resumed in the bottom of the 4th with the TinCaps ahead, 3-1. In the top of the 5th, Sawyer Carroll blasted a two-run homer to right-center to make it 5-1. Robert Lara forced in a run with a walk in the 7th and Blake Tekotte ripped a solo shot to lead off the 8th which made it 7-1.
Meanwhile, RHP Eduardo Perez (2-0) fired four perfect innings to pick up the win. South Bend plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th on singles by Reynaldo Navarro and Victor Estevez. RHP Alexis Lara pitched a scoreless 9th to finish the game.
In the seven-inning nightcap, LHP Nick Schmidt was brilliant again, allowing an unearned run on three hits in five innings.
In the top of the 2nd, Adam Zornes sliced a two-run double off the wall in the right-field corner to make it 2-0.
South Bend scored a run in the 4th inning to cut the lead in half, but Daniel Robertson's RBI single down the left-field line in the 5th made it a 3-1 game.
In the 6th, Tekotte ripped a leadoff triple to right-center. He was balked home to extend the Fort Wayne lead to 4-1.
Schmidt grabbed the win to stay perfect at 4-0. RHP Brad Brach struck out the side in order in the 7th to notch his 17th save of the year. South Bend LHP Taylor Sinclair took the loss to fall to 2-2.
