Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - For the 11th time in their 19-year history and the fifth in seven seasons as an Oakland A's affiliate, the Kane County Cougars are headed for the post-season come September. They split a doubleheader with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday night at Elfstrom Stadium in front of 12,870 fans, and the Cougars' 2-0 Game 2 victory clinched a first-half playoff spot. Anthony Capra posted a quality start, and Mickey Storey logged a perfect seventh for the save. If the Cougars win Sunday afternoon, they will clinch their first regular-season Western Division title since 2004.
The Cougars scored their only Game 2 runs right away against Evan Frederickson (3-4). Jason Christian scored on a wild pitch, and Grant Desme grounded out to make it 2-0. Capra (2-4) gave up two hits -- both singles -- over six innings, walked none and fanned five in the victory. He retired 12 in a row at one point and delivered his fifth quality start of the year. Storey recorded his ninth save and moved his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 11.
In Game 1, the Cougars lost, 7-2. Starter Matt Fitts (2-6) gave up single runs in the first and second and then four more before departing in the third without recording an out. Trey Barham gave up Wisconsin's final run. The Cougars got RBI singles from Steve Kleen in the third and Christian in the seventh for their only runs.
The Cougars (40-29) and Timber Rattlers (34-35) conclude their four-game series and the season's first half on Sunday afternoon at 1 CDT. Shawn Haviland (4-3, 3.59) will face Cody Adams (1-4, 5.06)
