June 20, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN -With a 7-3 win in the suspended game followed by a 4-1 win in the nightcap, Fort Wayne has now improved to 11-0 against the South Bend Silver Hawks this season, and in the process clinched the Eastern Division First Half crown.
South Bend has dropped nine straight games and 17 of their last 18 with one game remaining in the season's first half.
Fort Wayne held a 3-1 lead when Friday's game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning. The TinCaps jumped all over South Bend when the game resumed, scoring twice in the fifth inning on a two-run homer from Sawyer Carroll. Blake Tekotte added a solo shot in the top of the eighth inning to help the TinCaps take a 7-1 lead.
South Bend tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth, scoring runs on singles by Reynaldo Navarro and Victor Estevez to make it a 7-3 ballgame. The Hawks would get no closer however, losing game one to drop their eighth straight game.
Ryan Cook (LP, 5-5) pitched three innings Friday night before the game was suspended, suffering his fifth straight defeat. Eduardo Perez (WP, 2-0) took over for the TinCaps when the game was resumed Saturday afternoon and threw 4.0 perfect innings to earn the win in relief.
Game two was much of the same, as the TinCaps made it 11-0 against South Bend this year. Adam Zornes had a two run double in the second, and Daniel Robertson added a RBI single in the fifth against Taylor Sinclair (LP, 2-2).
South Bend scored one against Fort Wayne starter Nick Schmidt (WP, 4-0) in the fourth, with Marc Krauss scoring on a fielder's choice from Rossmel Perez. It was the only run South Bend would get in the game, with Zach Herr (ND) pitching the sixth and Brad Brach (SV, 17) striking out the side in the seventh and final inning.
The first half wraps up Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM Eastern Time at Coveleski Stadium. LHP Keny Sosa (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his second start for South Bend while Fort Wayne counters with RHP Erik Davis (5-2, 3.43 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and at www.silverhawks.com.
