Brockton Rox News Release

Little Falls, NJ (August 22, 2008) - RHP John Kelly secured his place in the Brockton Rox record books with his 23 career win and 294th strikeout, both franchise records and RHP Jerry Dunn posted his 22nd save of the season, also a Rox record, in a 5-2 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Kelly struck out six and battled to allow two runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts over six innings to get the win. After facing eight batters in the fourth inning and allowing the lone pair of Jackals' runs, Kelly settled in to retire six of the last seven men he faced with three strikeouts before departing after the completion of the sixth inning. Setup man RHP Matt Zachary was called upon to get six outs and worked brilliantly through a scoreless seventh and eighth inning to hand the ball off to Dunn for his record-setting save in the ninth. Zachary struck out three of the seven batters he faced. Dunn worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his save.

The Rox offense jumped on the board first against LHP Isaac Pavlik, against whom the Rox were 0-2 in two previous matchups. With two outs in the first inning, RF Dennis Abreu tripled and scored on an RBI single by 3B Eduardo Rios in the ensuing at bat. The Rox then loaded the bases on a pair of walks and 1B Jason Colson was hit by a pitch to drive in Rios.

After New Jersey tied the game in the fourth, Rios crossed the plate in the sixth inning with the go-ahead run for Brockton on an RBI single by LF Jud Thigpen. Brockton would add two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning on a pinch-hit RBI triple by CF Josh Womack and an RBI single by SS Dominic Ramos.

Brockton and New Jersey square off in the second game of the series on Saturday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. Rox RHP Greg Bunn (1-2, 8.47 ERA) will face RHP Michael Vicaro (6-5, 5.89 ERA) of the Jackals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
