Tornadoes falter in slugfest

August 22, 2008 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER - Both teams went deep three times, but Jake Daubert's three-run shot in the eighth inning proved to be the difference as the Ottawa Rapidz topped the Tornadoes by a 6-4 final in front of a season-high 3,183 fans on Friday night at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

All of the game's runs were scored via the home run. Matt Weagle was strong through seven innings while allowing three runs (all earned) on only four hits, fanning four and walking three. Scott Grimes (2-for-5), B.J. Weed (2-for-5), and Francisco Caraballo (2-for-3) all had multiple hit nights led by Caraballo's fifth long ball in the last seven games. Grimes added an inside-the-park home run and Chuck Jeroloman hit a solo shot. With a home run each, Caraballo and Grimes continue to keep pace with each other, and are now tied for second in the league with 19 big flies.

Ottawa used a pair of round trippers to open up a 3-0 lead after four innings. Jereme Milons hit the first, a two-run shot in the second that plated Jake Daubert for the 2-0 score. Kyle Geiger added a solo shot to left in the fourth for the three-run cushion.

Worcester used its first inside-the-park home run of the season to pull within two at 3-1. Grimes hit a blooper down the right field line which took a wicked bounce over Pete Pirman. It rolled around in the corner, allowing Grimes to circle the bases and barely beat the relay throw.

Jeroloman went deep in the sixth to pull even closer at 3-2 while Caraballo crushed a two-run shot in the seventh inning to nearly the identical spot which gave the Tornadoes their first lead of the game, 4-3.

Ottawa answered right back, continuing the home run derby with a long ball of its own. This time, Daubert went to center field with two outs in the eighth, scoring Jose De Los Santos and Geiger to retake the lead at 6-4. Cardoza Tucker struck out the side in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.

The series continues on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. with Shaun McNamara taking the hill opposite Noel Baca. It is Fan Appreciation Night with a Fireworks Show following the game. Then Sunday is the final regular season home game with a special Tykes Club pizza party planned!
