New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - On the night the New Jersey Jackals retired the number of pitcher Joel Bennett, Brockton Rox starter John Kelly pitched the Rox to victory as the Jackals fell 5-2 on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Kelly (8-5) went six innings and allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks despite pitching with a torn labrum. Out of the bullpen, Rox relievers Matt Zachary and Jerry Dunn combined to fire three scoreless innings with Dunn notching his league-leading 22nd save of the season. For the Jackals, left-hander Isaac Pavlik (8-5) took the loss despite allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings.
The Rox plated two runs in the top of the first inning on RBI single by 3B Eduardo Rios and a bases-loaded hit by pitch by 1B Jason Colson to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Jackals countered in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the score on RBI singles by 3B Chris Kelly and CF Zack Smithlin.
In the top of the sixth, an RBI base hit by Rox LF Jud Thigpen put Brockton on top 3-2. The Rox then added two runs in the top of the ninth inning against Jackals' reliever Dustin Cameron to put the game out of reach at 5-2.
The Jackals and Rox continue their three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. New Jersey right-hander Michael Vicaro (6-5, 5.89 ERA) will get the start against Brockton righty Greg Bunn (5-4, 7.59 ERA).
