Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals held a press conference today to announce that the Kansas City Royals have extended their working agreement with their Triple-A club through the 2010 season. Omaha has been the Royals' highest-level affiliate since both teams' inaugural 1969 campaign. The relationship is currently the second-longest in Triple-A, trailing only the Atlanta Braves, who have had their top affiliate in Richmond since 1966.
"We are very happy to be returning to Omaha for another two years," Royals Assistant General Manager/Scouting and Player Development J.J. Picollo said. "We have a long history and a great tradition there and feel that it is a great home for us. We appreciate the relationship with the ownership and feel that they are a first class operation."
Over the course of the past 40 years, Omaha fans have watched several of the Royals' all-time greats play here just before making their mark in the big leagues. George Brett (1973-74), Frank White (1973), Willie Wilson (1977), Dan Quisenberry (1979), David Cone (1985-86), Mike Sweeney (1996-97), Joe Randa (1994-1996) and Jermaine Dye (1997-1998) are a few of those names.
Several players currently on Kansas City's 25-man roster also played at Rosenblatt, including Mike Aviles (2006-08), Billy Butler (2007-08), David DeJesus (2003-04, 06), Zack Greinke (2004) and Mark Teahen (2004-06).
"The Kansas City Royals are a first-class, professional organization which prides itself on quality player development," said Alan Stein, Omaha Royals President. "Kansas City General Manager Dayton Moore and his front office staff are putting together a young team on the rise and we want to be a part of that."
"We are excited to extend our partnership with Kansas City for the next two seasons," said Martie Cordaro, Omaha Royals General Manager. "After 40 years, we realize how much of a connection there is between the Kansas City Royals and professional baseball fans in Omaha."
The Omaha Royals play their home finale at Rosenblatt Stadium tonight at 7:05 p.m., taking on the New Orleans Zephyrs. It's Cox Communications Fan Appreciation Day, with the Royals giving away dozens of prizes. Plus, it's Thirsty Thursday with $1 beer and Cokes during the game, courtesy of 96.1 The Brew, Action 3 News and The City Weekly. Player awards and charity donations will also be made. To cap off the festivities, fans will enjoy live music with Big Bo and the Biscuit Eaters, presented by Two Fine Irishmen.
