Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - Iowa scored eight runs in the first three innings and cruised to an 8-3 win over Memphis Thursday night at AutoZone Park.

Micah Hoffpauir's grand slam in the second inning gave the Cubs a five-run cushion after Casey McGehee's RBI-single in the first. Felix Pie added a two-run homer in the third inning to cap a three-run rally. Pie and Hoffpauir each finished the night 2-for-5. Rico Washington drove in all three Redbirds runs with a pair of home runs. Washington's two-run blast in the second inning put the 'Birds on the board and his solo homer in the seventh was his 12th of the year.

Iowa starter Randy Wells was sharp in his six innings of work to pick up the win. Wells gave up two runs on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Memphis starter Clayton Mortensen was roughed up for eight runs on nine hits in just three innings to take the loss.

The Redbirds begin their final series of the season tomorrow night against Oklahoma. Blake Hawksworth will be on the bump for the 'Birds with game time set for 7:05 p.m.
