Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Kannapolis, NC - For the second straight start Carlos Torres took a no hitter beyond the sixth inning, this time allowing a two out single in the seventh. Torres allowed just one run and earned his first victory of the year in a 4-1 Intimidator win over Asheville. The Kannapolis win moved its magic number to two. At the end of the Intimidators game, Augusta was still in the middle of the second game of a doubleheader with Columbus on Wednesday night. The Greenjackets won game one 10-1, but were trailing 2-0 in the third. An Augusta loss would lower the magic number to one, meaning Kannapolis could clinch the Southern Division with a win on Thursday night.
The I's got on the board in the bottom of the sixth off of Asheville starter Ryan Mattheus (6-6) when Josh Hansen reached on a walk. Bernie Gonzalez hit a ground ball back off of Mattheus for an infield single. Adam Ricks laid down a bunt base hit to load the bases before Aaron Cunningham connected on his second Intimidator single driving home Hansen. Gonzalez was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to first before a Jose De Los Santos fielder's choice scored Ricks to make it 2-0. Chris Getz hit a pop up single behind the mound to drive home Cunningham with the third Kannapolis run.
Asheville got one back in the seventh on a Justin Nelson RBI double but would get no more. Matt Zaleski came on in the eighth pitching a pair of scoreless innings for his 21st save. Torres earned his first Intimidator win (1-3). Mattheus took his sixth loss of the year. Kannapolis and Asheville meet again Thursday night with the I's looking to win the division. Adam Russell (9-6 3.36) tosses for K-town. Samuel Deduno (7-8 5.92) goes for Asheville.
