RiverDogs to assist with hurricane Katrina relief aid
August 31, 2005 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC -- The Charleston RiverDogs, known for their devotion to community as well as their innovative promotions, will help with relief aid for those who have suffered from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina.
Thursday night's game against the Rome Braves, the last regular-season home contest of the season, is billed as Fan Appreciation Night and the game will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display.
The theme for the game, in addition to thanking the many RiverDogs fans for their support in 2005, will surround a beach motif as leis were planned to be given away free to those entering the gates.
However, the RiverDogs will now sell the leis for a minimum donation of $3 each, with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. In addition, the RiverDogs pledge to match what is raised from the sale of the leis, dollar-for-dollar.
"We know that people in the Charleston area are sensitive to what hurricanes can do and we can certainly empathize with what the people in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and other states are going through," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "At least a couple of our players have family or friends in the affected areas, including Cody Ehlers who has relatives on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, and we certainly feel for them along with the many others who have suffered great losses from this natural disaster."
In addition to discounted beverages, there will be numerous prizes to be given away through a wading pool filled with sand. Buried in the sand will be small film canisters that contain messages that indicate which prize has been won and fans will be selected at random to dig for prizes.
The individual who donates the most money for their lei will automatically qualify to dig for a prize, in addition to receiving four tickets behind home plate for the September 9 South Atlantic League playoff game.
Back on July 14, the RiverDogs made a sizeable donation to the British Red Cross after the tragic subway terrorist bombing in London.
Tickets for Thursday night's contest can be purchased by contacting the RiverDogs Box Office at (843) 577-DOGS or by visiting the team's website at www.riverdogs.com.
