
Catfish swept in doubleheader by Augusta

COLUMBUS, GAâ¹The Augusta GreenJackets swept a doubleheader tonight at Golden Park over the Columbus Catfish by scores of 10-1 and 8-2. Augusta has won the first three games of the series. The GreenJackets took advantage of 14 Catfish walks in the fourteen innings of the doubleheader and eight Catfish errors in the two games. LF Ryan Carter continued his hot hitting with three hits in the doubleheader for the Fish including two doubles. Columbus managed just eight hits as a team in the two games. The GreenJackets scored five unearned runs in the second inning of Game 1 to jump out to an early lead and a big victory, while RHP Ben Thurmond tossed a complete game for Augusta in the second game, retiring the final 19 hitters and striking out 12. The Catfish now must win their final five games of the season to finish with a record above .500 in the second half, as they fall to 57-74 overall, 29-33 in the second half with the two losses tonight.
The Catfish never led in Game 1, as Augusta scored against RHP Arismendy Castillo in the first inning on an RBI double by RF Brian Horwitz, and scored five unearned runs in the second frame. SS Marcus Sanders drove in two with a double in the inning. RHP Brandon Weeden allowed three runs in four innings tonight but also struck out six. The Fish scored their only run in the first game on an RBI groundout by 3B Eduardo Perez.
In the second game, Columbus jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Carter and 1B David Nicholson doubled to lead off the game, and Perez drove home Nicholson later in the inning with the single. Augusta RF Mike Wagner tied the game with a two-run triple in the second, and Augusta plated four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth on just three base hits to take an 8-2 advantage. Thurmond struck out 12 Catfish including eight straight from the second through the fourth inning in the victory. Tomorrow the Catfish and GreenJackets wrap up the season series when RHP Brian Akin (1-2, 4.13 ERA) makes his first Catfish start at 7:00 PM.
