Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - Christian Vitters took a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night to give the Kane County Cougars a 3-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and send the Elfstrom Stadium crowd of 11,354 fans into a frenzy. Each team had scored twice in the first inning before the bats went silent until the Cougars' ninth.

Starter Henry Rodriguez gave up two runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three in a no-decision, posting his fourth quality start of the season. He allowed two runs in the first and never had a perfect inning but managed to last six frames. Then the Cougars responded in the bottom half against spot starter Keith Renaud, as Jermaine Mitchell lifted a sacrifice fly and Matt Smith singled home a teammate to make it 2-2.

The score remained until the ninth despite scoring chances from each side, as there were only three 1-2-3 innings all game. In the ninth against Shawn Kelley (1-1), Mike Affronti and Sean Doolittle singled. After a bunt by Haas Pratt cut down Affronti at third, a botched Wisconsin rundown allowed Doolittle to take third and Pratt second. Mitchell was walked intentionally to load the bases, and after a strikeout, Vitters took ball four to end the game. Reliever Derrick Gordon (2-1), who entered after two scoreless innings from Scott Moore, got the win.

The Cougars (6-11), who have won three out of their last four, battle the Rattlers (8-9) again Sunday afternoon at 2 CDT. James Heuser (6-4) will face Anthony Varvaro (4-7).
