West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - The Great Lakes Loons are in last place in the Midwest League Eastern Division, while the Whitecaps are in first place but the Loons have found a way to win five out of seven meetings between the two clubs, including 4-1 on Saturday night.
West Michigan committed a season high four errors, including two when the Loons scored three runs in the eighth inning.
Lauren Gagnier produced his longest outing of the season for West Michigan. He threw 7.2 innings but walked in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Carlos Santana picked up the RBI.
Two more runs scored in the inning with Ed Clelland on the mound. With the bases still loaded, Matt Berezay hit a sharp grounder to shortstop Audy Ciriaco who threw high to second causing Scott Sizemore to jump off the bag. Sizemore then threw home as Josh Bell started the play at second and tried to score. The throw from Sizemore was high and went to the backstop, which made the Loons lead 4-1.
The Whitecaps grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Sizemore singled with two out and scored on an RBI triple by Brennan Boesch.
In the top of the sixth, the loons tied the game on back-to-back one out doubles by Tommy Giles and Eduardo Perez.
West Michigan left five runners on base in the first two innings, but were handled well for most of the night by Josh Wall. In eight innings on the mound, Wall allowed nine hits but issued no walks and struck out seven.
Miguel Ramirez retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his ninth save.
