Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants lost 6-3 to the Kamloops Blazers Friday night at the Pacific Coliseum. Penalties were the story of the game as the Blazers had a lopsided 10 power plays, compared to 3 for the Giants. It was the difference as Kamloops went 3-for-10 on the man advantage.
Brendan Ranford opened the scoring on the man advantage just after the midway point of the first period. Brandon Herrod added another goal 2:20 later to make it 2-0. Matt Bellerive potted his 6th goal of the season to cut the lead to 2-1, but Ranford scored his second of the night on the power play before the period was out to give the Blazers a 3-1 lead through 20 minutes.
It didn't get much better in the second period for the Giants. 1:03 into the frame, Adam Morrison misplayed a puck behind his net resulting in another goal for Herrod and making it 4-1 Kamloops. That would be the end of the night for Morrison who allowed 4 goals on 11 shots in just over 21 minutes of action. He was replaced by Jackson Whistle. Jordan Martinook banged home his 35th goal of the year with under 2 minutes remaining in the period to cut the lead to two goals after 40 minutes.
In the third period, Brandon Herrod completed his hat trick to give the Blazers a 5-2 lead. The visitors would add one more on the power play to go ahead 6-2. David Musil scored a late power play goal to complete the scoring. 6-3 was the final. Jackson Whistle made 19 saves in relief. The Blazers finished 3-for-10 on the power play, while the Giants went 1-for-3. Brendan Ranford finished with 5 points on the night.
Spokane also lost on the night, meaning nothing changes in the race for 4th place in the Western Conference. Both the Giants and Chiefs have 79 points, but Spokane has a game in hand.
The Giants and Blazers will do it all over again tomorrow night in Kamloops at the Interior Savings Centre. Puck drop is at 7:00 pm. The pregame show begins at 6:30 pm on AM 650.
