Kalamazoo Growlers News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI -Two games, two Mallard home runs. Two games, two Growler losses.
Unlike the close 3-2 loss to Madison yesterday, Kalamazoo was blown out 6-1 to fall to 14-46 and one loss closer to the worst record in Northwoods League History.
Starter Alec Byrd (Florida State), for his second start in a row, got hit around. In his five innings of work, he gave up eight hits and five runs.
The Growlers threatened in seventh when Alex Gosser (Arkansas) led off with a walk. The next batter, Bryce Adams (LSU) hit a double. Gosser, though, when he was rounding third, didn't beat the ball to home plate and was thrown out.
John Ruiz (Miami), following Adams, hit a single to center field. Adams, like Gosser, didn't beat the throw to home and the inning ended with no runs scoring.
The only Kalamazoo run came in the eighth inning of a sacrifice fly from John Soteropulos (Cal).
On the Madison side of the game, the offense exploded. The Mallards (35-25, 15-10) out hit the Growlers 14-8.
Leading that offense was Jason Goldstein (Illinois). Goldstein went 4-4 with two singles, a double and a home run. His offensive performance resulted in four of the six Mallards' runs.
Kalamazoo now enters an off day playing two consecutive doubleheaders against the Battle Creek Bombers.
