Anchors stung for second night in a row

Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release


Willmar, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Willmar Stingers Tuesday night at Bill Taunton Stadium by a score of 6-3. In the second half, Alexandria is now 13-12 and 25-35 on the season.

The Stingers scored first against Jake Mattys in the bottom of the second. Ky Parrott singled and stole second but was erased on a fielder's choice from Lucas Tancas for the first out. Tanks stole second and the throw from the catcher went into the outfield allowing him to reach third. A ground out from Troy Dixon plated Tancas putting the Stingers up 1-0.

In the top of the third, the Blue Anchors got on the board against Kiko Garcia. Steve Sada singled with one out and moved to third on Drew Fearing's double. Josh Merrigan singled up the middle bringing in both runners putting the Anchors ahead 2-1.

The seesaw battle continued in Willmar's half of the third. Sean Beesley singled with two outs and he stole second. Storm Wilson hit a single to center bringing in Beesely to tie the game. Eddie Estrada then singled Wilson to third and the Stingers pulled off a successful double steal which allowed Wilson to score putting them in front once again 3-2.

Willmar added to it's lead in the fourth. Tancas singled to start the inning and advanced to second on Dixon's base hit. A groundout moved both into scoring position and Justin Thaxton hit a sacrifice fly scoring Tancas. Dixon made his way to third on the sacrifice fly and another two-out hit, this time from Brian Pruett, extended the Stingers' lead to 5-2.

Alexandria got back on the board in the sixth. Merrigan reached on an error and moved to second on a two-out wild pitch. Trooper Reynolds hit a double to left scoring Merrigan cutting the deficit down to 5-3.

An insurance run for the Stingers was added in the eighth against Tom Watson. Estrada singled with one away and moved to second on a walk to Parrott. Both runners made their way into scoring position and an infield hit from Dixon scored giving a final score of 6-3.

Matthys (1-5) finished the game with four innings pitched allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts. Watson provided the bullpen great relief by throwing four innings of one-run ball. Only allowed only three base runners and he struck out five.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Tom Watson (RP) - The birthday boy had one of his better appearances of the season. He now has a 0.52 ERA in his last four outings.
