K-Wings Week in Review

Kalamazoo began the week returning to the road Wednesday (1/10) when they traveled to Quad City to face-off against the Mallards. Quad City was looking to rebound after a tough shootout loss to Kalamazoo last Friday (1/5). The K-Wings struck first, late in the opening period with a power-play goal from Kory Karlander(16), extending his goal streak to four games. Kalamazoo kept the momentum going into the second stanza with another power-play tally at 5:21 from Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn (4). The Mallards evened the score with goals from Luke Stauffacher (13) and Patrick Nadeau (5). The third period began with a blast from K-Wing defenseman Jeff Brown, who scored his second goal of the season. Quad City's Stauffacher (14) knotted the game with just 3:08 left, forcing the game into a shootout. Quad City came away victorious over Kalamazoo in the shootout with a final score of 4-3.

The K-Wings started the weekend off with back-to-back home games. The Chicago Hounds came to Wings Stadium Friday (1/12) on Lansing Popcorn Night. The last time these two teams met, Kalamazoo beat the Hounds by a score of 9-1. Chicago scored first at 4:46 into the opening stanza with a goal from Todd Grant (8). In the second period, a slap shot at 4:46 from Justin Cross (20) equalized the game. Kalamazoo's Kory Karlander (17,18) lit the lamp twice in third, giving the K-Wings the lead. Adam Elzinga chipped in his sixth goal of the season to seal the deal for Kalamazoo, as they skated away with a 4-1 victory over the Hounds.

Archrivals, the Fort Wayne Komets were in town on Saturday (1/13) to face-off against the K-Wings. Kalamazoo jumped ahead first when Alexander Valentin scored his second goal of the season on a rebound from Jason Lawmaster. Fort Wayne gained momentum early in the second period when J.C. Ruid (22) registered a tally at 2:23. The Komets continued to score late in the second after a blast from Bogdan Rudenko (15). Fort Wayne struck first in the third after Rudenko (16) scored on a rebound. Down 3-1, the momentum switched over to Kalamazoo after Karlander (19) scored on a penalty shot. K-Wings captain Nick Bootland (22) knotted the game at 10:36, forcing the K-Wings into their sixth shootout in 12 games. Glenn Detulleo scored the only goal in the extra session giving Kalamazoo the 4-3 victory over Fort Wayne.

Kalamazoo traveled to Muskegon on Sunday (1/14) to battle the Fury. Muskegon jumped on Kalamazoo early, scoring three goals in the opening period. Rustyn Dolyny (15), Todd Robinson (27), and Adam Smyth (7) all added points in the first. Kalamazoo prevented the shutout for the Fury with a tally from Kory Karlander (20), who extended his goal streak to eight goals in seven games. The second period was all Muskegon as Adam Smyth (8,9) got the hat trick, along with two more goals from the Fury. Jon Insana (6) scored in the third, helping Muskegon skate away with the 8-1 victory over the K-Wings.

Fast Forward

Kalamazoo will begin their week after the All-Star break on the road with three games away from Wings Stadium. The trip commences on Friday (1/19), when they travel to Fort Wayne. The Komets are presently in first place in the Western Conference with 48 points.

The K-Wings will continue their road trip on Saturday (1/20) when they travel to Port Huron. Kalamazoo leads the season series 4-2-1. The Flags are currently tied for fourth place with Elmira in the Eastern Conference with 36 points.

The K-Wings will cap off their weekend with a trip to Flint on Sunday (1/21). The last meeting between the Generals and the K-Wings was on New Years Eve at Wings Stadium. Kalamazoo came away with the 4-1 victory. Flint begins the week in third place in the Eastern Conference with 37 points.

Extending the Streak

Forward Kory Karlander extended his goal streak to seven games. In the seven game duration, Karlander has scored eight goals and registered 12 points. The streak is tied for the longest in the UHL this season and is also a season high for the K-Wings.

Five Alive

Captain Nick Bootland is on a three-game point streak. Bootland has scored one goal and had four assists in the three game span. The captain has registered a point in six of his last seven games. -MORE- Scoring Late

Kalamazoo has outscored their opponents 56-33 in the final stanza. Besides being their most prolific scoring period, the +23 also illustrates the K-Wings largest scoring differential.

All Stars

Kalamazoo will be sending six players to the All-Star Classic this Wednesday (1/17). Representing the K-Wings will be goaltender Tom Askey, forwards Nick Bootland, Justin Cross, and Kory Karlander, and defensemen Jeff Brown and Adam Elzinga.

The Obscure Stat of the Week

After playing one shootout game in the first two months of the season, the K-Wings have been in six extra sessions in their last 13 games.
