K-Wings and Beast Combine for Ten, But Beast Hold Home Ice
January 10, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
BRAMPTON, ON - The Kalamazoo Wings and Brampton Beast combined for ten goals, but it would be Brampton protecting their home ice with a 7-3 victory on Sunday at the Powerade Centre.
The Beast sprung out to an early lead with Luke Pither tallying the game's first goal at 11:19 of the opening period. Pither gained the Kalamazoo line, snapped a wrist shot through a window of bodies in front, and beat Joel Martin over the stick side and into the top corner of the goal.
Brampton built upon their lead early in the second period as Chris Auger swung the Beast lead to two goals at the 2:31 mark. Auger crashed Martin's goal and was able to bury a second-chance opportunity after an initial save was made by Martin on Nick McParland.
Four minutes later and while shorthanded, Kalamazoo would cut the deficit to one goal. Brett Ponich cleared the puck into the Brampton end, and paced it perfectly for David Gilbert to scoop it off the bounce and wire it past Trevor Cann.
Re-establishing their two-goal lead just minutes later, Angelo Miceli pounced on a vacated puck near the Kalamazoo goal and chipped in his sixth of the season.
Kalamazoo struck next as the Wings controlled the play in the Beast zone. A Ponich shot ended up on the tape of Adam Phillips, who sent the puck in front of the goal where Colin Murray deflected it into the net, cutting the Brampton lead to just a goal.
Thirty nine seconds later, Brampton would counter-attack yet again and re-open their multi-goal lead. After a mad scramble in front of Martin's crease, the puck trickled to the stick of Jeff Brown, whose point-blank wrister gave the Beast a 4-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
Six minutes into the third period and carrying down the ice on a two-on-one, Pither fired a pass to Nick McParland, who one-timed the puck over the outstretched glove of Martin to give the Beast 5-2 lead.
The Beast put the nail in the coffin with their sixth goal of the night while operating on a five-on-three power play. Pither deflected a shot by Travis Brown through the legs of Martin and into the goal for his second of the night.
A late empty netter was added by Reggie Traccitto, capping off a seven-goal night for Brampton.
With twenty seconds left, Gilbert scored his second of the game with a quick shot from the left circle, but it wasn't enough, as the Beast skated away with a 7-3 win.
Notes: Kalamazoo scored their fifth shorthanded goal of the year. Ponich had his first multi-point game of the season with two assists. Murray scored his first goal since November 29 against Toledo. Alex Mallet's seven-game point streak, which began on December 19th, came to an end. The Wings are 0-3-0-0 on Sundays at Powerade Centre in Brampton.
