UC Health Stadium - Florence, KY

Game #31 - Home Game #19 (12-18), (8-10)

Last time out...

The Florence Freedom (12-18) earned their first road series victory of the season with a 3-0 defeat of the Lake Erie Crushers (10-17) in five innings Thursday night Jeremy Gooding (2-0) was the star of the show for the Freedom, tossing five shutout innings and only allowing one hit. He struck out five batters and did not walk anyone in the victory. Florence broke through with three runs in the fifth against reliever Zac Treece (0-1). Steve Carrillo got things going with a single down the left field line. Travis Weaver bunted him over and Carrillo advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Sean Mahley reached on an infield single, Daniel Fraga singled home Carrillo on a perfect hit-and-run with Mahley advancing to third on the play. With two outs, Austin Newell doubled home Mahley and Fraga to extend the lead to 3-0. That's all Gooding needed as the game was called due to rain after five innings.

For Starters...

Chuck Weaver is coming off a no-decision against the Schaumburg Boomers on June 14 as he went six and two thirds innings, giving up four runs on nine hits in a 9-7 loss for Florence. Weaver is looking for his first win since his Frontier League Pitcher of the Week award winning performance on May 21 as he went eight shutout innings to beat the Frontier Greys with a career high 11 strike outs. Weaver shined in 2014 as he finished the season with a 2.65 ERA, good for first on the team and fifth in the Frontier League. His notable outings included a career high eight innings of one-run ball against Southern Illinois on June 14, seven innings of one run ball on June 28 against River City, seven innings of shutout ball against Gateway on July 3 and seven innings of shutout ball against Traverse City on August 13. In 17 starts, Weaver went six or more innings 13 times. Weaver was signed by the Freedom in June 2013 after he finished up his collegiate career at IPFW. He had a solid rookie season, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.70 ERA in 14 appearances, 12 starts. The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native started 13 games as a senior for the Mastadons, posting a 2-5 with a 3.57 ERA. Weaver threw two complete games as a senior and pitched 70.2 innings. He played two years for IPFW after transferring from Vincennes University where he was named to the NJCAA All-Academic team.

Against the Miners...

The Freedom posted a record of 3-6 against the Miners in 2014 with a record of 2-1 at home.

Trying to get a streak going...

With a win tonight the Freedom would have their first three-game winning streak since they won four in a row to start the season.

Frontier League Player of the Week...

Austin Newell was named the Frontier League Player of the Week for June 7-14. Newell hit safely for the entire week with the Freedom and recorded a multi-hit game in all but one of his team's six games. The hitting streak is Newell's second of at least six games already this season. He also had a six game hitting streak from May 23-29. Overall, he totaled 15 hits in 26 at bats over the course of the week, including one home run, three doubles, six RBI and 10 runs scored. Newell is in his 5th season of professional baseball and his first with Florence. The 26 year-old outfielder originally hails from Arlington, TX and played collegiately at the University of Texas-Tyler.

Walk it out...

The Freedom have drawn 119 walks this year, that's the most in the Frontier League.

Run this way...

The Freedom's 60 stolen bases this season are the most in the Frontier League. However, they have been caught 20 times, also the most in the league.

Transaction Wire...

The Freedom placed RHP Austin Delmotte on the 7-Day DL today. They signed OF Justin Harris.

Tonight's Special Jersey Number...

Travis Weaver is wearing #61 tonight. The jersey is auctioned off each game to benefit the Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky.
