
Slammers Fall to Rascals 4-3

Joliet, IL- The Joliet Slammers (11-20) go 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position in their 4-3 loss to the River City Rascals (18-12) on Friday night.
The Rascals got on the board first in the top of the second inning against pitcher Andrew Strenge. With one out, 2B Hector Crespo singled and RF Zach Komentani smashed a ground-rule double to left. With a pair in scoring position, catcher Jackson Slaid grounded out to short, scoring Crespo to make the score 1-0 Rascals.
The Slammers responded with a run against reliever Marc Rutlege in the third. With one out SS Alfredo Rodriguez singled to left field and moved to third on a 2B Max Casper base knock. CF JD Williams drove the ball to center, deep enough to score Rodriguez on the sacrifice fly. After LF Phil Bates doubled to put two in scoring position, 1B Nate Roberts flew out to left, stranding two men on base.
The Slammers took the lead in the fourth. Rodriguez walked and moved to third on a Williams single. With two strikes and Bates up, Williams took off for second. As the throw from the catcher Slaid went to second, Rodriguez broke for home. He scored on the double steal, giving Joliet the 2-1 lead.
River City tied and took the lead in the fifth. LF Brian Hansen grounded an RBI single to center, scoring Slaid to make it a 2-2 game. Hansen stole second and scored on a DH Josh Ludy single to put the Rascals on top before Strenge got out of the inning.
In the seventh inning River City added to their lead, Brian Hansen was hit by a pitch then advanced to second on a fielder's choice. 1B Danny Canela singled to left to score Hansen which made it 4-2.
Heith Hatfield came in to close things out for the Rascals in the ninth. The Slammers got a rally going as Hunter Ridge pinch hit and led off with a single to right. Williams followed with a single of his own. LF Phillip Bates laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners over. 1B Nate Roberts grounded out to first scoring Ridge cutting the deficit to one. The rally came to an end when DH Russell Moldenhauer grounded out to second to end the night. The Merchants and Manufacturers Bank player of the game was Alfredo Rodriguez. He went 2-4 with two runs scored. The Slammers take on the Rascals tomorrow night at 7:05pmCT.
