Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things were matched up against the fourth-place Frontier Greys on Friday, June 19. The Greys took a twelve-inning thriller by the score of 2-1 after coming back from a 1-0 deficit.
Washington starter Matt Sergey went 8.1 innings with nine strikeouts, while allowing one run. Shortstop Austin Wobrock gave his pitcher a lead in the bottom of the seventh when he doubled down the first base line to score designated hitter David Popkins. Wobrock led all Wild Things at the plate, going 3-5 with the lone RBI.
It was not until the top of the ninth that the Greys struck back. Center fielder Jhiomar Veras came off the bench to hit a home run, tying the game at one run apiece.
Both teams were unable to score in the 10th and 11th innings, but in the top of the twelfth, the Greys scored what ended up to be the winning run on a close play at the plate. The eventual winning RBI was credited to center fielder Ben Lodge. The Wild Things tried to battle back, but were unsuccessful in their attempt.
The Wild Things and Greys will have a short turnover, as they face off in game two of their three-game series on Saturday, June 19. First pitch from CONSOL Energy Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Fans can get tickets by calling the Wild Things front office at 724-250-9555 or visit www.washingtonwildthings.com.
