Last time out...
Florence scored all their runs with two outs in a 6-3 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers on Wednesday night. Cody Bishop delivered a two-out RBI single in the fourth to put Florence up 1-0. Joey Burney doubled in a run to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. But Florence took the lead for good in the top of the fifth as Austin Newell tallied a two-out, two-RBI single to put the Freedom up 3-1. A passed ball scored another run to make it 4-1. The Crushers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-3. But Florence shut down the Lake Erie offense for the remainder of the game and added two runs in the eighth on a two-out, two-RBI double from Steve Carrillo. Ed Kohout picked up his fourth save by tossing a scoreless ninth. The Freedom used six relievers after Tony Vocca started the game and they combined to toss five and a third innings of two-run ball.
For Starters...
Jeremy Gooding makes his second start of the season for the Freedom tonight. In his Florence debut on June 13, Gooding went five innings, giving up four runs on five hits in a 16-6 win for the Freedom over the Schaumburg Boomers. The 24-year old went to school at Madonna University in Michigan. He made his professional debut in 2014 with the Fort Worth Cats of the United League. He also pitched with Amarillo of the American Association in 2014 and compiled a record of 2-2 with a 1.62 ERA in 8 starts between the two organizations. He struck out 56 batters in 55.2 innings and tossed two complete games with one shutout. The Freedom acquired Gooding from the Grand Prairie Air Hogs for a Player to Be Named Later.
Going for the series win...
Tonight is the rubber match of the three-game series between the Freedom and the Crushers. The Freedom are looking for their first road series win of 2015. Florence won only two road series in all of 2014. So far this year Florence has had two rubber matches on the road (against River City and Gateway) but lost both games. With a win tonight the Freedom would win their first series, home or away, since they took two of three from the Frontier Greys at UC Health Stadium May 19-21.
Get that final out!
The Freedom's pitching staff has an ERA of 5.15, the second highest in the league. Part of the problem is that teams are hitting .326 against Freedom pitchers with runners in scoring position and two outs. Overall, opponents are hitting .289 against the Freedom, the highest average in the league.
Lock them down...
Last night was another strong performance from the Freedom bullpen as they held the Crushers to two runs over the course of five and a third innings. Florence's bullpen has a 3.02 ERA in June.
What a Threll...
Collins Cuthrell is off to a hot start as a rookie, hitting safely in each of his first four games (7-17) with two RBI and two doubles.
Frontier League Player of the Week...
Austin Newell was named the Frontier League Player of the Week for June 7-14. Newell hit safely for the entire week with the Freedom and recorded a multi-hit game in all but one of his team's six games. The hitting streak is Newell's second of at least six games already this season. He also had a six game hitting streak from May 23-29. Overall, he totaled 15 hits in 26 at bats over the course of the week, including one home run, three doubles, six RBI and 10 runs scored. Newell is in his 5th season of professional baseball and his first with Florence. The 26 year-old outfielder originally hails from Arlington, TX and played collegiately at the University of Texas-Tyler.
Walk it out...
The Freedom have drawn 117 walks this year, that's the most in the Frontier League.
Run this way...
The Freedom's 59 stolen bases this season are the most in the Frontier League. However, they have been caught 19 times, also the most in the league.
