Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio-The Lake Erie Crushers were defeated by the Florence Freedom, 3-0 on a soggy Thursday Night in five innings as the Crushers offense was able to scratch across only one hit before the rain started.

The loss for the Crushers (10-17) is their second loss in a row and they fall to 4-12 at home. The Freedom (12-18) picked up the win and won their road series this season.

In the early going, the starting pitchers stole the show. The Freedom offense got their first hit in the second inning. Cody Bishop singled to lead off the inning and Gaby Juarbe followed with a single of his own. Crushers starter Zach Morton then struck out Steve Carrillo and Travis Weaver to end the threat.

The Crushers only hit came off the bat of Jose Barraza as he hit a blooper that dropped in left field. The Crushers would have only one other base runner in the game as Frank Desico was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fifth. Juan Sanchez's ten game hitting streak ended in the contest.

The Freedom would put the first runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Zac Treece came on in relief of Morton and gave up a leadoff single to Carrillo that rolled into left field past a diving Anderson Hidalgo. Travis Weaver then laid down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to move Carrillo to second. He would move to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Sean Mahley then hit a slow roller to Treece. The ball hit the pitcher's glove and rolled to shortstop Juan Sanchez. Runners were on first and third when Daniel Fraga hit a single through the right side of the infield. Carrillo scored and Mahley went to third. Mahley and Fraga would score on a double to right by Austin Newell.

The rain delay began before the game entered the sixth inning and was called an official game after a half hour break while the rain continued to fall.

In his second start with the Crushers, Morton threw four strong innings, giving up two hits, walking two, and striking out six and did not allow a run. Jeremy Gooding (2-0), also in his second start of the season, went five innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Treece (0-1) allowed four hits and three earned runs in one inning of relief.

The Crushers begin a three game road series in Normal, Illinois to take on the CornBelters tomorrow night. The Crushers starter will be right hander Hunter Adkins (0-2, 1.75) and Normal will start right handed pitcher Chris Carmain (3-2, 4.04). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:35 PM.
