TODAY: The Mudcats conclude a six game home stand today with game three of a three game series versus the Winston-Salem Dash at Five County Stadium in Zebulon.
ICYMI: Tucker Neuhaus and Ronnie Gideon both homered in the fourth and Joantgel Segovia hit a solo shot in the sixth, but the Dash countered with three home runs of their own while defeating the Mudcats 10-4 last night at Five County Stadium.
ABOUT THE LAST ONE: Joantgel Segovia hit a solo home run in the eighth last night while going 2-for-4. The home run was his first with the Mudcats and already his fifth extra-base hit since he joined the Mudcats on June 5. Segovia is currently 2nd in the CL in OPS (1.342), tied for 2nd in extra-base hits (5) and tied for 2nd in the SLG (.842) since joining the Mudcats.
VS. DASH: The Mudcats opened the season by winning three of four versus the Dash at Five County Stadium, but have gone just 1-8 against them since. Tonight's game is the 14th of 21 meetings between the two teams; with Winston-Salem leading the overall season series 9-4... Carolina finished the 2017 season going 19-5 against the Dash, including a perfect 13-0 record when playing the Dash at home in 2017.
STARTING OFF: LHP Cam Roegner has today's series finale start versus the Dash at Five County Stadium. Roegner is currently 6-3 with a 1.85 ERA this season. Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in earned run average (1.85), 9th in WHIP (1.14), 3rd in LOB% (82.9%) and 5th in GB% (51.4%). He last pitched on June 5 against the Wood Ducks where he allowed five runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings pitched. Three of those runs and five of his eight hits allowed all came in the first inning. He then went on to allow just two other runs and three more hits the rest of the way while working through the sixth. He also struck out two, walked one and allowed a home run while taking his second straight loss.
WHERE THEY RANK: LHP Cam Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in earned run average (1.85)... SS Luis Aviles Jr. is currently 3rd in the CL in stolen bases (15)... INF Ronnie Gideon (80) and INF/OF Tucker Neuhaus (77) and 1st and 2nd in the CL lead in most strikeouts... RHP Marcos Diplan is currently tied for 3rd in the CL in most walks (34)... RHP Luke Barker is tied for 2nd in the CL in games (19), 2nd in lowest average against (.158) and 1st in fewest baserunners/9ip (7.76).
ON THE LISTS: The Mudcats roster currently features several of the Brewers top 30 prospects as ranked by Baseball America; including RHP Phil Bickford (No. 17), C Mario Feliciano (No. 20), RHP Marcos Diplan (No. 20) and LHP Nathan Kirby (No. 27)... Marcos Diplan and Mario Feliciano are also currently rated as the No. 11 and No. 14 prospects in the Brewers system by MLBPipeline.com.
STINGY MAY: Carolina pitchers combined to pitch to a Carolina League best 2.65 ERA in May (258.1 IP, 105 BB, 255 SO, .225 AVG). They also went 16-13 in May, while the offense totaled 20 home runs, 4.48 runs/game and a .245 average (.702 OPS).
MUDDIES ON THE POND: Carolina is batting a CL low .237 with runners on base. The Mudcats are also 9th in the CL when batting with runners in scoring position (.245) and 7th when batting with RISP/2-outs (.228) this season.
INTRA-DIV: The Mudcats are currently just 20-28 in games against Southern Division opponents and own a Carolina League worst .417 winning percentage in games against their own division this season. Carolina is currently 0-6 in games at Down East and just 1-6 games in Winston-Salem this season.
GOT HEEEM: Max McDowell leads MiLB catchers in most caught steals (32) and is 2nd in caught stealing/stolen base efficiency (.552) for catchers with at least 30 attempts against in all of MiLB... He totaled 18 CS (.450) during his first season with the AZL Brewers in 2015. He then totaled 54 CS (.443) in 2016 with Wisconsin and 31 CS (.556) last season with Carolina.
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 122 more strikeouts than hits (603 SO, 481 H) so far this season. Carolina's difference in strikeouts over hits is currently the 3rd largest in MiLB. Since 1991, only the 2017 and 2007 Mudcats have finished a season with more strikeouts than hits. Carolina totaled 164 more strikeouts than hits in 2017 (1,245 SO [franchise record], 1,081 H) and 70 more strikeouts than hits in 2007 (1,219 SO, 1,149 H).
AWARDS SZN: Keston Hiura was named the Carolina League's Player of the Month for the month of May on June 5 by Minor League Baseball. Hiura was also named the Brewers Minor League Player of the Month for May by Milwaukee on June 4... Carolina has also had three players earn CL Weekly Player/Pitcher of the Week awards this season; Ryan Aguilar - April 16-22, Weston Wilson - April 23-29 and Cam Roegner - May 7-13.
