Salem RidgeYaks News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (Sunday, June 10) - The Salem Red Sox broke out of an offensive malaise Sunday night with an astonishing rally in the eighth inning, but stranded the tying run in the eighth and ninth frames as they fell 4-3 to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at TicketReturn.com Field.
Salem (28-31) didn't have a hit until the fifth inning, but still made their hosts sweat in the game before ultimately falling. Myrtle Beach (33-29) notched their ninth consecutive win and swept the Sox in the three-game series. It was the first time the Pelicans had swept Salem since July 19-21 of 2015, and the first three-game road sweep Salem had suffered since July 4-6, 2017 at the Carolina Mudcats.
The Pelicans opened the scoring in the bottom of the first against Salem starting pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez (L, 3-3), who surrendered a leadoff single to Andruw Monasterio before P.J. Higgins bunted Monasterio to second base. Jhonny Pereda earned a walk from Hernandez, and the Pelicans pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third. Hernandez then fired a wild pitch that brought Monasterio home and advanced Pereda to third. The lefty couldn't find the plate after that, walking Wladimir Galindo and Kevonte Mitchell to load the bases. With Connor Myers at the dish, Hernandez issued another walk, scoring Pereda and giving the Pelicans a 2-0 lead.
Taylor Ahearn took over for the Sox in the bottom of the second, and saw some struggles of his own. With two outs, Higgins hit a fly to right that Hill missed for a two-base error, and the inning unraveled for the Sox. Pereda singled to put runners at the corners, and Galindo singled home Higgins with a soft liner to center. Mitchell then lashed a double to left, scoring Pereda and running the Pelican lead to 4-0.
After starter Erick Leal shut out the Sox through four no-hit innings, Casey Bloomquist (W, 1-0) picked up where he left off, holding the Sox scoreless through his first three innings of work. However, things began to come apart for him in the top of the eighth, as Jordan Procyshen singled to begin the inning, and moved up to second on a wild throw by Monasterio. Chris Madera singled into left, moving Procyshen up to third and chasing Bloomquist from the game. New reliever Jhon Romero (S, 4) entered, and promptly gave up an RBI single to right by Santiago Espinal; the troubles compounded for the Pelicans when Luis Ayala overran the ball, allowing the runners to reach second and third. Brett Netzer took advantage, lacing a single to right to plate both runners and cut the lead to one run. Roldani Baldwin singled to left, putting the tying run at second, but Bobby Dalbec and Jerry Downs each fanned, and Tyler Hill popped out to Higgins at first to end the threat. In the ninth, Madera singled with two outs to keep the hopes of Salem fans alive, but Espinal flew out to left, ending the game.
Hernandez was erratic in his lone inning of action, allowing two runs on one hit and four walks while fanning one. Ahearn surrendered two unearned runs on six hits while fanning three over four innings of work. Hunter Smith fired two shutout frames of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one. Jake Cosart struck out one in a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
The Sox open a five-game, three-day series against the Potomac Nationals Monday evening, with righty Jake Thompson making the start for Salem in Game 1 of a doubleheader. First pitch from Haley Toyota Field is at 5:05 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 4:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
