Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - In what turned to be a soggy affair, the Wilmington Blue Rocks dropped a rain-shortened 2-1 contest to the Frederick Keys Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. The Rocks held an early 1-0 lead before Frederick struck for two in the top of the fifth inning before the game was ultimately ruled an official game prior to the start of the sixth inning. Wilmington finished the homestand with a 5-2 record.
After each starting pitcher threw a scoreless first inning, the Blue Rocks capitalized in the second inning against Keys' left-hander Ofelky Peralta. Kort Peterson singled and Chase Vallot smacked a ground rule double over the left-center field wall to put runners at second and third. Peralta settled in and recorded back-to-back strikeouts before he uncorked a wild pitch to allow Peterson to score to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
As the rain started to intensify, Peralta and Blue Rocks' starter Arnaldo Hernandez continued to exchange scoreless innings until the top of the fifth inning when the Blue Rocks. Frederick's shortstop Alejandro Juvier led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Ryan McKenna singled to right field to tie the game at 1-1 before Preston Palmeiro roped a double to left-center field to push the go-ahead run across for the Keys to make it a 2-1 deficit for the Blue Rocks.
Wilmington was unable to attempt a comeback as the rain was too heavy to play in and the game was ruled official by the umpires.
The Rocks will begin their final road trip of the first half starting with a three-game series against the Down East Wood Ducks on Monday, June 11 at Grainger Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and Wilmington will send left-hander Daniel Tillo (1-1, 2.61 ERA) to the mound. He will be opposed by fellow lefty Sal Mendez who makes his Carolina League debut. Fans can tune into the game with Matt Janus on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
