Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys got another dramatic win on Thursday night and this time the hero was RF Jacob Julius. Julius hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie. Frederick would hold onto that lead and defeat Lynchburg, 7-4, in game one of the four-game series. With the win the Keys improved to 31-23 and stretched their lead in the Northern Division to seven games. Lynchburg fell to 24-30 in the defeat.
RHP Ryan Berry made his third start for the Keys on Thursday night and he ran into some trouble in the third inning. With Frederick leading 1-0, Berry gave up a solo homerun to SS Miguel Rojas. Rojas' homer was the first hit Berry surrendered on the night. With one out, LF Cody Puckett hit another solo homerun. Puckett's blast gave Lynchburg a one-run advantage.
Berry ran into more trouble in the fifth. With one out, CF Efrain Conteras doubled off of Berry. The next Hillcat to come to the plate was Cody Puckett and he brought home Conteras on a RBI double. 2B Jose Gualdron hit an infield single and SS Greg Miclat made a low throw to first that got past 1B Joe Mahoney and Puckett was able to score on the error by Miclat.
Berry left the game after five innings. On 68 pitches, he allowed six hits, four runs, three earned, and struck out four.
Trailing by three runs, the Keys bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth.
CF Kyle Hudson started the inning with a walk. LF Xavier Avery, the next Key to come to the plate, took a Curtis Partch pitch to rightfield for a single and Hudson advanced to third on the single. SS Greg Miclat grounded out to short but on the play, Hudson scored from third. Next up was 1B Joe Mahoney. Mahoney, who had not hit a homerun since May 19, hit a towering shot to right-center for this sixth homerun of the season. Mahoney's homer tied up the game at four.
Lynchburg starter, Curtis Partch, threw five innings on the evening. He surrendered four runs, three earned, on five hits, walked four, and struck out three.
Neither team would score until Frederick came up in the bottom half of the seventh.
Kyle Hudson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Following an Avery strikeout and Miclat groundout, Joe Mahoney was intentionally walked to bring RF Jacob Julius to the dish. In Julius' last start on May 25 against Wilmington, he was 3-3 with two doubles and a homerun. Tonight, he picked up his fourth homer of the season and it could not have come in a more important time. Julius skied a Sean Watson pitch to rightfield. RF Kyle Day gave chase but could not make the catch as the ball cleared the fence for a three-run shot.
Frederick's bullpen was flawless once again as Jose Duran, Brett Bordes, and Jose Diaz did not allow a run to score in four innings of work. Diaz pitched a perfect top of the ninth for his sixth save in as many chances.
The Keys and Hillcats will take the field Friday night for game two of the four-game set. Frederick will send RHP Ryan O'Shea (3-3, 3.99) to the hill while Lynchburg will throw RHP Brad Boxberger (3-4, 3.38). First pitch is set 7:00 p.m. on United Way Night. Fireworks presented by Bryant with follow the game.
