Charleston RiverDogs News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The New York Yankees have announced that former Citadel southpaw JP Sears has been activated from the seven-day disabled list and will make his first professional start as he takes the ball for the RiverDogs on Saturday night at First National Bank Field.
A native of Sumter, South Carolina, Sears, 22, returns to the active roster after pitching four innings of relief on Opening Night for the RiverDogs on April 5, allowing one run on a pair of hits while striking out three in Lexington in his first outing as a Yankee farmhand. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list the following day.
An acquisition by the Yankees in a trade with Seattle this offseason, Sears put up video game numbers in his pro debut last season after being drafted by the Mariners in the 11th round. The former Bulldog left-hander fanned 51 batters in 27 2/3 innings (an average of 16.6 per nine) while posting an immaculate 0.65 ERA and .138 opposing average, all in relief.
While at The Citadel, Sears was named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2017 and a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist after going 7-3 with a 2.64 ERA as a junior. He ranked fifth in the NCAA with 142 strikeouts and tied a Bulldogs program record when he punched out 20 in a two-hit shutout against VMI on March 24, 2017.
Sears (0-1, 2.25) matches up with Marlins No. 12 prospect Edward Cabrera (0-1, 0.82) for the Grasshoppers on Saturday night in Greensboro with the RiverDogs (6-9) down in the series two games to one. The game will be broadcast on WTMA 1250 AM in the tri-county area and streaming online at riverdogs.com and the TuneIn Radio app. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. Pregame coverage starts with "Saturday Dog Talk" at 6:30 p.m.
RiverDogs single-game tickets are now available for the 2018 campaign, the club's 25th season as the RiverDogs and their "175th season in dog years." Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com/tickets.
