Big Innings Costly in Fifth Straight Road Loss

Asheville Tourists News Release
CHARLESTON, WV- The Asheville Tourists have an unfortunate habit early on in 2018 of allowing opposing teams to put big innings together. Saturday afternoon was no different. The West Virginia Power scored four runs in the third and seven runs in the eighth to hand the Tourists a 13-2 loss.
Things started fairly well for the Tourists as Robinson Cancel had a plan to play small ball early in the game. In both the first and second innings Asheville put the lead-off man aboard, bunted him over to second, and then stole third. However, both rallies ended with untimely strikeouts.
The Power created their first scoring opportunity in the third and did not waste it. West Virginia plated four runs including a two-run double by Mason Martin. Asheville scored their first run in the top of the fifth. Taylor Snyder doubled and Robbie Perkins plated him with a single.
After West Virginia put solo runs on the board in the fifth and seventh innings, they erased all doubt with a seven-run eighth inning. The Power sent 11 batters to the plate and pounded out six hits. Calvin Mitchell finished 4-for-5 with four RBI.
Snyder delivered for the Tourists once more in the ninth. A double off the left field wall plated Bret Boswell for Asheville's final run. Antonio Santos dropped to 0-3 on the season despite another nine-strikeout performance. It is the second consecutive start for Santos where he worked six innings but allowed a four-run frame.
The Tourists will hope to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Power with Sunday's series finale set to begin at 2:05pm.
