McClure Dazzles on the Mound as Intimidators Extend Win Streak to 3 Games
April 21, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Behind a strong outing from 6-foot-7 right-handed pitcher Kade McClure and an explosive fourth inning at the plate for the offense, Kannapolis breezes by the Greenville Drive 7-0 Saturday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health.
The Intimidators (10-6) wasted no time getting run support for Kade McClure (W, 2-0), as Luis Gonzalez reached base to start off the first inning with a single, followed by a wild pitch with Justin Yurchak at the plate that sent Gonzalez to second. With a 3-1 count on him, Yurchak smacked a double to left-center that rolled all the way to the wall, scoring Gonzalez easily from second.
Kannapolis did not let up in the second inning, as McClure picked up his third strikeout of the first two innings, while his offense poured on four runs off Greenville's starter, Alex Scherff (L, 0-3). With Laz Rivera at second base, Tyler Frost picked up his first of two hits of the night with a single to right field, putting runners at the corners for Carlos Perez. The Venezuelan catcher roped a triple to center field, scoring Rivera and Frost for the second and third runs of the ball game.
After a Gonzalez walk, Johan Cruz grounded out on a hard-hit ball to shortstop Everlouis Lozada, allowing Perez to score from third for the Intimidators' fourth run. With two outs, Yurchak collected his second hit of the night on a laser up the middle, giving Kannapolis a 5-0 lead after two innings.
The Louisville product, McClure, continued his dominance on the mound against the Drive's offense, striking out a pair of batters in the fourth and another one in the fifth, economically pitching his way to the latter part of the game. Kannapolis added on another run for McClure in the fifth after Frost (3) laid into a fastball that was left over the middle of the plate, clearing the left field wall for his second home run in as many days.
With a six-run lead, McClure finished seven strong innings on the bump for manager Justin Jirschele, striking out nine batters, while scattering six hits. After a 384-foot solo-shot from leadoff hitter Gonzalez to left field, Kevin Escorcia shut the door on Greenville, striking out three guys in two innings on the mound, giving the Intimidators their third win in a row.
The I's will go for the four-game series sweep against the Greenville Drive (3-13) Sunday evening with the first pitch coming at 3:35 p.m. on Nick Jr. PAW Patrol Day. The specialty made jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the game.
