Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that RHP Earl Oakes has joined the team from extended spring training. Oakes, who is expected to arrive in Chicago before Saturday's 5 p.m. game against the Dayton Dragons, takes the active roster spot of RHP Jose Fragoso who has been promoted to the High-A Stockton Ports. Fragoso becomes the second Cougars player to receive a promotion to Stockton so far this season.

A Rule 5 acquisition in the Triple-A phase by the A's in 2007, Fragoso made four appearances for the Cougars - most recently on April 15. The right hander did not yield a run in 5.2 total innings of work and recorded the save in the Cougars' 5-2 win over Beloit on April 6.

Oakes, a 24th round pick of the A's in 2006, joins Kane County from the A's spring training complex in Arizona. The 22-year old spent the 2006 and a portion of the 2007 seasons with Short-A Vancouver before receiving a promotion to Stockton towards the end of last summer. While a member of the Ports, Oakes made six appearances, pitching 8.1 innings and allowing two runs.

Oakes' arrival on Saturday will bring the Cougars' active roster to 25 players, in accordance with Midwest League rules. Kane County (15-4), which holds a scant one-game lead over the Clinton Lumberkings for first place in the Western Division, opens a nine-game homestand beginning with tonight's 6:30 p.m. game against the Dayton Dragons at Elfstrom Stadium. Cougars right hander Scott Mitchinson (2-0, 3.00 ERA) opposes the Dragons' Matt Klinker (1-0, 0.00).
