West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - The Whitecaps five-game winning streak came to an end in a 7-3 loss at Cedar Rapids. West Michigan has now lost six of its last seven games away from Fifth Third Ballpark.
Kernels first baseman Efren Navarro went 3-for-3 with two RBIs while center fielder Clay Fuller went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs with a double and triple on the night. Whitecaps starter Lauren Gagnier continued to struggle as he surrendered seven runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks in 4.2 innings to fall to 0-2 on the season. Paul Nardozzi and Kelvin Cedano tossed a combined 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
West Michigan took an early lead to the game in the top of the first inning when Casper Wells hit an infield single to shortstop that scored Kyle Peter for the early 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Kernels answered in the second on Audy Ciriaco's throwing error with two runners on base that scored a run and Cody Collet's sacrifice fly to give the Kernels a 2-1 lead. Cedar Rapids added to the lead in the third on Navarro's RBI-single that scored Andrew Romine. Two batters later, Fuller ripped a double to left field to score two runs to give the Kernels a 5- 1 advantage.
The Whitecaps responded in the fourth on Justin Henry's RBI single to score Cory Middleton to make it 5-2, but that was as close as the Whitecaps would get.
Navarro came up big again with an RBI single in the fifth inning to score Romine and Fuller struck again with a triple to right field to score Navarro and make it 7-2 Cedar Rapids. Kernels starter Trevor Reckling improved to 2-0 as he allowed two runs (one earned) in 5.0 innings of work. The Whitecaps had no extra-base hits in the game, but Henry, Ciriaco and Peter each had two hits for West Michigan.
