Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
Jawad Williams scored 10 of his team high 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Rio Grande Valley Vipers ended the eight game win streak of the Erie Bayhawks with a 112-104 win at Tullio Arena Friday night. The Vipers have now won back-to-back games for the first time since January 20th.
The Vipers did not arrive to the Tullio Arena until 5:30 due to travel delays at the Detroit airport. Rio Grande Valley left McAllen at 5:30 Friday morning after playing Thursday night so a sluggish start could have been expected. The Vipers were far from that as they outscored the Bayhawks 36-29 in the opening frame. The first quarter also saw 6 lead changes and seven ties before RGV closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run. The Vipers would never surrender the lead for the remainder of the game
Jared Jordan tallied his second straight double-double and fourth of the season as he scored 18 points and dished out 14 assists a day after shattering the Vipers team record with 21 assists in Thursday's win over Ft. Wayne. The Vipers bench outscored Erie's 36-6 with Craig Winder leading the way with 15 off the pine. Trent Strickland added 14, Kurt Looby chipped in with 11 and 3 bloked shots, and Marcus Hubbard scored 12 to round out the double -digit RGV scorers.
Erie closed the game to within one with 5:47 remaining in the game on to made free throws from Cliff Clinkcales, but were unable to regain the lead. Maureece Rice scored a season and game high 29 points in the losing effort for the Bayhawks. Erik Daniels and Jackie Manuel each added double-doubles scoring 18 and 12 and hauling in 12 and 11 rebounds respectively.
The Vipers will try to extend their win streak to three games on Sunday night in Ft. Wayne when they close out their season series with the Ft. Wayne Mad Ants. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
