Sussex County Miners News Release
Augusta, NJ - The Sussex County Miners (42-32) earned a high-scoring 12-10 victory over the New York Boulders (36-39) on Friday night. This win comes as a memorable one for Bobby Jones, who now has 250 wins as manager of the Miners.
The Miners took the early lead with three runs in bottom of first, capped off by a two-run homer from Jackie Urbaez. Both teams began to trade runs in the middle third of the game before the Boulders tied it at 5 in the top of the sixth inning. The Miners responded with three of their own in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 9-5 lead into the seventh. More runs came for each side in the seventh, as the Boulders scored two before the Miners added three. The Boulders cut the deficit to 12-10 in the eight, but Miners bullpen closed it out with a scoreless ninth inning.
Alexander Vargas earned the victory for the Miners, giving up five earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Danny Zardon pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season. Alex Mack took the loss for the Boulders, giving up four runs on four hits in an inning of relief.
The offense really clicked for the Miners as every hitter in the lineup recorded at least one hit. Martin Figueroa went 3-for-4 with a Miners record-tying three doubles and four runs batted in. Chuck Taylor was excellent out of the two-hole, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Jackie Urbaez hit a two run home run, and Juan Kelly had two extra base hits and three runs batted in, as well.
The Miners and Boulders will continue their three-game series tomorrow night, with a 6:05 first pitch scheduled at Skylands Stadium. Ryan Munoz is set to pitch for the Boulders, while the starter for the Miners has yet to be determined.
