April 28, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The TinCaps tallied 10 hits Tuesday night at Parkview Field, but lost to the Dayton Dragons, 9-1, in the opener of a three-game series.
Third baseman Duanel Jones, who finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, gave Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single. For Jones, it was his team-leading 13th RBI of the year. The 21-year-old from the Dominican Republic is now hitting .388 -- tops in the Midwest League. His 13 RBIs rank fourth.
However, the TinCaps lead didn't last long.
Dayton (10-9) put up three runs in the top of the fourth inning and broke the game open with a six-run seventh. Only three of those runs were earned. The Dragons had only one hit in the seventh -- a bases-clearing triple by Ty Washington.
Fort Wayne (5-11) walked a season-high 11 batters, hit two, threw a wild pitch, committed a balk, and committed three errors.
Despite out-hitting the Dragons (10 to 6), the TinCaps went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base. Eight TinCaps had a hit. Jones was the only TinCap with more than one.
Wyatt Strahan (W, 3-1) worked five innings for the win as he struck out seven. Taylor Aikenhead (L, 1-1) took the loss after giving up two earned runs in four frames.
The middle game of the series is set for 11:05 a.m. at Parkview Field on Wednesday. Fort Wayne will start right-hander Walker Lockett (0-2, 5.65) against Dayton righty Tejay Antone (0-2, 4.02). The game can be seen on Comcast Network 81 and heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
