Series Opener Goes to Bees
April 28, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa- A game that was heavily sided with offense through the first four innings turned into a battle of the bullpens Tuesday evening at Community Field. The Burlington Bees (12-7) edged the Kane County Cougars (8-11) in the series opener 5-4.
The Cougars scored in each of the first three innings, but the Bees retaliated every time. Marty Herum broke a 1-1 tie when he led off the second inning with a solo home run over the left field wall. But Burlington answered Herum's second homer of the year with two runs in the bottom of the frame for the lead.
Steve McQuail tied the game back up with a deep sacrifice fly, but the Cougars stranded a runner at third to end the inning. The Bees retook the lead on Natanel Delgado's RBI single in the third. Burlington never looked back from there. Grabbing an insurance run in the fifth, the Cougars only scratched one more run across the rest of the night.
Jeremy Rhoades (3-0) picked up the win after allowing four earned runs through five and two-third innings. Brad Keller (0-3) suffered the loss coughing up four earned through five frames.
Bud Jeter and Cody Geyer stopped the bleeding with three innings of shutout relief, including a combined four strikeouts.
Tyler Carpenter halted the Cougars' offense after the sixth to record the hold. Eduardo Paredes tossed a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save in five tries.
The series continues tomorrow with a pitching matchup of Markus Solbach (1-1, 2.50) and Burlington's Kenyan Middleton (1-0, 3.63). First pitch from Community Field is at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
