Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - With former tandem-mate Alonzo Gonzalez promoted to Dunedin, Lansing Lugnuts starter Conner Greene combined with new partner Chase Mallard to muzzle the Lake County Captains in a 3-1 victory on Monday night at Classic Park.
The win improved the Eastern Division-leading Lugnuts to 13-6 and dropped the Captains to 8-11.
The 20-year-old Greene (W, 2-1) allowed only a Taylor Murphy 5th-inning home run in five comfortable frames, giving up five hits, walking none and striking out a batter in each of the first four innings.
He yielded to Mallard for the sixth, and the former UAB star aced his first relief outing of the season. Mallard (Sv., 1) set the Captains down in order in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings, pitching around the mild threat of a single and a walk in the seventh.
All that remained, then, was the offense, and that was handled by ninth-place hitting Tim Locastro.
Facing starter Anderson Polanco (L, 0-3) in the fourth inning, the Lugs' second baseman drove in D.J. Davis with an RBI fielder's choice for a 1-0 lead. He then sped around to third on Anthony Alford's hit-and-run single to right and scored a second run on a passed ball by catcher Francisco Mejia.
Locastro was hit by a pitch leading off the seventh against reliever Cameron Hill, coming plateward on an Alford RBI double to supply the final margin.
Alford went 2-for-5 to raise his batting average to .370, notching his fourth multi-hit game in six games with Lansing.
The second game of the three-game series features a matchup of top prospects, with the Lugnuts sending right-hander Sean Reid-Foley (0-0, 2.45) to the mound opposite Lake County left-hander Justus Sheffield (1-1, 3.65) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Lansing Lugnuts return to Cooley Law School Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Friday, May 1st, opening a six-game homestand with a Freebie Friday: Kids Eat Free, featuring Myron Noodleman and postgame LAFCU Fireworks. For more information, call (517) 485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
