Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Midland, Mich. - Brent Honeywell and Hunter Wood combined on a two-hit shutout, and Thomas Milone scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning to give Bowling Green (11-8) its Midwest League-best fourth shutout victory - and its ninth win in the last 11 games - in a 1-0 triumph over the Great Lakes Loons (8-8) in front of 1,006 fans at Dow Diamond Tuesday night.
Honeywell (2-1) was dominant for the second straight start, duplicating his last outing six days prior against Dayton by allowing just one hit - a Faustino Oguisten single in the third - over 6.0 innings, while striking out seven and issuing no free passes. In his last 12.0 innings pitched, the Carnesville, Ga. native has permitted only two hits while walking one and fanning 14. Opposing hitters are just 2-for-40 over that stretch when facing the right-hander.
Wood retired the first seven batters he faced with five strikeouts from the seventh until one out in the ninth, when Oguisten snapped a streak of 17 straight Loons retired with a humpback single to right field. The 6-1 right-hander hunkered down to induce a foulout from Mike Ahmed and a game-ending groundout from Alex Verdugo to record his first save of the year and first since Aug. 1, 2013.
Bowling Green scored the only run of the game in the first inning, when Milone knocked a leadoff single up the middle, stole second base and took third after a groundout by Riley Unroe. Jace Conrad extended his hitting streak to 10 games in the next at-bat by recording an infield RBI single plating Milone for the 1-0 lead.
While the Hot Rods scored only once, Bowling Green had a pair of chances in the later innings. The first chance came in the top of the third inning, when Milone singled into right field for his second hit of the game, and Unroe reached first base safely on a bunt single. Milone moved from second base to third base following a Conrad flyout to right field, and tried to come home on a Casey Gillaspie lineout to Verdugo in centerfield, but was thrown out at the plate by on a close play to keep it 1-0.
Cristian Toribio gave the Hot Rods their best scoring chance after the third inning, when he opened the top of the eighth inning by roping a double down the left-field line, and moved to third base after another Unroe groundout, but the inning ended on a Conrad flyout to centerfield, leaving Toribio at third.
Oguisten was the only Loon to record a hit, going 2-for-3, while the rest of the Great Lakes lineup went 0-for-26 with 11 strikeouts. The only other Loon to reach base was Johan Mieses, who did so in the first inning for Great Lakes when Toribio pulled Gillaspie off the bag on an errant throw, but Mieses was thrown out at second on an attempted steal by Nick Ciuffo, whose one-hop throw was handled by Toribio from his backside, but the tag was still administered the end the inning.
Milone had two of Bowling Green's seven hits, as the Hot Rods improved to 5-4 in one-run games, winning five of the last six such contest.
Bowling Green looks to clinch the series against Great Lakes Wednesday at 5:05 p.m. CDT when Greg Harris (1-2, 2.12) locks horns with Grant Holmes (0-0, 4.50), the number four ranked prospect in the Dodgers system according to Baseball America.
