Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Edinburg, TX - Carl Johnson hit an RBI-double in the top of the 14th inning to send the Harlingen WhiteWings (6-8) to a 13-12 victory over the Edinburg Coyotes (6-7) in six hours and 24 minutes tonight at Edinburg Stadium. The WhiteWings have won three-straight for the first time this season.

Brian Nichols led off the inning by reaching on an error against Bryan Heaston (1-1). He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a wild pitch. That set up Johnson's hit in his only at-bat of the game after entering in the 12th as a pinch-runner.

Dan Ziegler (1-0) picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief and Caleb Balbuena picked up his second save with a scoreless 14th.

The WhiteWings took advantage of sloppy defense in the first, as David Fowler hit a one-out fly ball off Bric Steed (0-2) to right field that was overrun by Eric Gonzalez, allowing Fowler to go all the way to third. Kevin Griffin followed with an RBI-triple into the right field corner and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

The lead didn't last long, though. In the bottom of the inning Angelo Fermin led off with a walk against Kenny Evoniuk (1-1) and stole second. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. Logan Wood hit a two-out double and Gonzalez attoned for his error with a two-run home run to make it 3-2 Coyotes.

The WhiteWings tied it up in the top of the second when Miguel Peguero led off with a double and scored on a Bub Bergstrom RBI-double.

Brian Nichols led off the third with a walk and Terry Roblez doubled. Argelis Nunez followed with a two-run double to knock out Steed. Nunez later scored on an RBI-double by Bergstrom against reliever Miguel Martinez to make it 6-3.

Griffin led off the fourth with an infield single and stole second. Ryan Fox walked and Nichols hit an RBI-single. One batter later, Nunez hit an RBI-single to make it 8-3.

Jason Arrowood led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and later scored on a Fermin sacrifice fly to bring the Coyotes within 8-4.

The WhiteWings got that run back in the fifth as Bergstrom led off with a double and later scored on a wild pick off throw by Arrowood.

Nichols belted a three-run home run off of Miliade Venas in the seventh to make it 12-4. It was Nichols fifth homer of the season.

The Coyotes got to Chris Street in the seventh as Wood led off with a walk and Eric Gonzlaez doubled. Amado German reached on an error to score wood and pinch-runner Geivy Garcia. Arrowood followed with a walk and Patrick Gaylord reached on an error. Nick Aranda hit a sacrifice fly against Todd Lutz. One batter later, Gary Roche reached on an error to score Arrowood and make it 12-8.

The Coyotes rallied for four runs in the ninth to tie the game. With one out, Aranda walked and Fermin singled. Gary Roched followed with an RBI-single to knock out Lutz. Derek Bennett came in to try to nail it down, but blew his third save when Daryl Jones hit an RBI-single and Wood hit a two-run double to tie the game 12-12.

The WhiteWings and Coyotes complete the three game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Alex Gett (0-2) will face right-hander Eric Montoya (1-0).
